The Neubauer family dynasty of guitar makers was founded by Anton Neubauer, a pupil of Franz Hirsch, in Schönbach in what is now the Czech Republic, and moved to Tennenlohe, Bavaria, following their expulsion in 1946. Anton, his brother August and the young Helmut, Anton’s son, worked in Arnold Hoyer’s workshop until they set up their own business in Bubenreuth in 1955. The hand-built, exceptionally high-quality jazz guitar shown here is one of the first archtop guitars that the then 24-year-old Helmut built, maybe still at Hoyer’s workshop, presumably under the guidance of his father, who trained him. The guitar already bears the signature he used throughout his life, albeit without the later, characteristic headstock design.
